Malaysians are rude??

Are Malaysians rude? This is a very difficult question indeed. Yesterday, Reader’s Digest came out with a report ranking countries with the level of rudeness and out of 35 countries, Malaysia was ranked 33rd. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister was among the first to show his utter disgust with this ranking saying that Malaysians are not rude and the report by the Reader’s Digest is very wrong.

Unfortunately, for Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, majority of Malaysians disagree with him according to the New Straits Times (NST). And the most surprising thing is, majority of foreigners who lived in Malaysia agree with Datuk Seri Najib. Here we have the local people saying Malaysians are in fact, rude while foreigners who had gained PR status said otherwise. In fact, one of them told the NST that one of the reasons why they came to live in Malaysia was because Malaysians are very courteous.

Hence, the question rise again, are Malaysians rude? I personally don’t agree with the quote saying ‘Malaysians are rude’ because I believe that Malaysians are not rude, they are just not very helpful with strangers, that’s all. I mean of course, there are some occasions where Malaysians can become rude towards others but those are very isolated occasions. But then again, we have to ask the Reader’s Digest about the methods used in their study. It is because only that will determine whether they actually had a clear picture of how Malaysians behave or not.

But the longer I think about this matter the more I realize that Malaysians should not be debating about whether the results of this survey is accurate or not. The focus should be on improving our courtesy towards others. It doesn’t take much to smile and say ‘thank you’ to strangers. It does not take the time of your life to hold the door for others or to pick somebody’s pen up when it falls from their grip. It is not difficult to be courteous, so why is it so hard to be courteous? I leave that question for you to ponder. Ciao.

Hi. I am a foreigner and have been living in kl for 3 years. I have to admit malaysians totally lack courtsey. If you are crossing the street at the traffic light the cars dont stop. Lack traffic manners. Totally inconsiderate to other road users. Then comes the courtesy of greeting. No one ever greets when entering a lift. Or say thank you. (all race groups). Being muslim when a person is greeted salaam, malays just stare and dont respond. Even our prophet stated that it becomes compulsory to reply once greeted and smiling is a form of charity. I experienced a chinese guy at china town insult a korean women, telling her go back to korea this is malaysia. We do things different. I thought bargaining was part and parcel of china town. Then comes the indian taxi drivers who never seem to use meters even though on the taxi door it states otherwise. Also they refuse to take you to certain places eg. Klcc to sentul. Malay women I think are the friendliest in malaysia. Chinese are too snobbish and full of themselves. Malay men too lazy. Malaysia truly asia as the ad campaign is very misleading.. here the have aparthied worse than south africa ever had. For havens sake even the immigration officer at the airport doesnt smile. What a welcome for a foreigner. malaysia buck up or u will continue staying ontop of the list of rudeness.
